When did you last visit the Medical Library?



The Medical Library exists to serve the informational, educational, and administrative needs of the Martin Army Community Hospital. The Medical Library provides authoritative and up-to-date systems, resources, and services to meet the needs of knowledge-based information in patient care, education, research, and management.  The Medical Library also serves as the “library without walls” for the hospital’s staff and patients. The library is located in room 010 in the Administrative Basement of the hospital. Our hours of operation are Monday – Friday 0835-1630.  We are closed on nights, weekends & holidays. The library’s phone numbers are (706) 544-3533/4438; DSN 784-3533/4438.  Our fax number is (706) 544-3215; DSN 784-3215.

The MACH Medical Library offers job related Internet access, information on regional and national health resources, and access to the Southeastern Regional Medical Command’s online library network (http://sermclib.amedd.army.mil/). This allows patrons to search the book and journal holdings of all five medical libraries in the Southeastern Regional Medical Command.  The MACH Medical Library also subscribes to OVID, StatRef!, MDConsult along with First Consult, and Up-To-Date  These electronic resources must now be accessed through your Army Knowledge Online (AKO) account, AMEDD Medical Library & Information Network, or the MACH Portal. The library also subscribes to the Georgia Interactive Network for Medical Information (GaIN). Accredited hospital staff needing access to any of these resources need to contact the hospital librarian for passwords and userids. Some of the library’s other resources include:

1.  Up-to-date collection of medical journals and books with an      emphasis on clinical medicine

2.  Interlibrary Loan services for items not in our collection

3.  Medical Library subscribes to Audio Digest in Family Practice

4.  Consumer health materials and patient education information       provided through the Internet.  Staff will assist patients with       internet searches.

5.  Other services provided by the library include library      orientations upon request, personal purchases of medical      books for staff through Majors and Rittenhouse, and      photocopying.

Online Access to Free Full-Text Medical Journals

 

A.HighWire Press is a division of the Stanford University Libraries, which produces the online versions of high-impact, peer-reviewed journals and other scholarly content. Recipient of the 2003 ALPSP Award for "Service to Not-for-Profit Publishing", HighWire partners with influential scholarly societies, university presses and publishers to create a collection of the finest, fully searchable research and clinical literature online. Together, these partners produce nearly half of the 200 most-frequently-cited journals publishing in science.

HighWire Press hosts the largest repository of free full-text life science articles in the world, with more than 750,000 free, full-text articles online. Since 1995, with the launch of the Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC), to the continuous online production of hundreds of prestigious journals, such as Science Magazine, the New England Journal of Medicine, PNAS and JAMA, HighWire has established an outstanding reputation for helping to disseminate primary scientific information on the Web

B.Serial Solutions allows provider to search across OVID, MD-Consult, and 1,380 full text online journals from the Directory of Open Access Journals by journal title or keyword search. Health Sciences includes 18 Dental Journals, 19 Nursing Journals, 159 General Medicine Journals and 55 Public Health journals.

 (Userid’s and passwords are required for MD-Consult.  OVID is searchable only from within the hospital or MEDCOM. Providers should contact the librarian if you need userid’s and passwords.)

TOP 100 WEBSITES FOR CONSUMER HEALTH AND PATIENT EDUCATION MATERIALS Access the “TOP 100” web sites for consumer health and patient education materials as compiled by the Consumer and Patient Health Information Section f the Medical Library Association.  This site allows to access health information and patient educational materials relating to men, women, children, and seniors.  In addition to listing sites of interest for specific age groups, this web site also gives one access to web sites that deal with specific health problems, drug information, and web sites of interest to the health professional and other web sites of interest.  The Medical Library Association and CAPHIS endorse the Criteria for Assessing the Quality of Health Information on the Internet of the Health Summit Working Group. These sites have been reviewed using the HSWG guidelines and other criteria such as outlined in this collection of guidelines. These criteria include: credibility, sponsorship/authorship, content, audience, currency, disclosure, purpose, links, design, interactivity, and caveats.
